Warehouse conversions, new towers and the tightest Victorian streets in the city.
East London contains the widest range of building types of any sector, often on the same street. A Victorian terrace, a 1960s estate, a warehouse conversion and a 2020 tower can sit within a hundred metres of each other in Hackney or Poplar.
The terraced streets here are the narrowest in the capital, with parking on both sides and frequently a bus route running through. The new towers are the opposite problem: easy inside, entirely governed by a booking sheet.
It is also the fastest-changing part of London, which means mapping and street layouts are often out of date.
Narrow streets, booking sheets and constant roadworks
Terraced streets across Hackney, Leyton and Walthamstow are genuinely narrow, with residents parked both sides. A large vehicle can often get in but frequently cannot turn, so the approach and the exit both get planned, and sometimes a smaller shuttle is the honest answer.
Warehouse conversions in Hackney Wick, Bow and Shoreditch have generous internal volumes and often a goods lift, but access is through an industrial door with its own quirks and the loading area is usually shared with other tenants.
The newer towers around Stratford, the Royal Docks and Canary Wharf run on concierge bookings — bay, lift, protective blankets, insurance evidence — all reserved ahead and all in fixed slots.
